¡CIMARRÓN!

El domingo nos espera una maravilla: el joropo de los llanos del oriente de Colombia, del grupo Cimarrón. Pueden escuchar la música aquí, vienen como parte de la increible serie de Music Without Borders. Qué suerte vivir en Chicago en el verano. Se nos olvida el tormento de nuestro invierno...Escribí sobre algunos grupos extraordinarios que nos visitarán este verano en el último ejemplar de Contratiempo. No se pierdan del concierto en Millenium Park, y además habra afterparty en Las Tablas. Sunday will be marvelous, musically speaking - Cimarrón will be at Millenium Park, as part of the amazing concert series courtesy of Cultural Affairs: Music Without Borders. I wrote about some of the extraordinary groups that will visit us this summer in Contratiempo´s latest issue. After Sunday´s concert, there will be an afterparty at Las Tablas.

¡Ya viene el verano!

Summer music starting VERY SOON!!!! Don´t miss a single concert at Millenium Park. On the Latino front, for the first time in Chicago: the collective Novalima mixing afroperuvian rhythms with reggae, hip hop and electronica, from Perú (via Hong Kong, London, Barcelona and Lima, where it´s founders are based); the awesome Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán with all that soul-filled music that is at the heart of Mexico, and Cimarrón, pulsating, shimmering, percussive harp and steaming footwork from the eastern plains of Colombia. A few more days left...

...quedan algunos días para ir a ver la película "Fados" de Carlos Saura. Hubo quienes criticaron la excesiva estilización de la cinematografía, y quizás mucha danza moderna ajena al género...pero vale la pena escuchar la música, y presenciar, por ejemplo, el fado de Argentina Santos. Me encanta esta interpretación del fado clásico de Amalia Rodrigues: Lagrima (ver el video. escuchar la canción) still a few days left to catch Carlos Saura´s "Fados" at the Gene Siskel Film Center. The film was criticized a bit for its excessive style and perhaps a bit too much modern dance numbers which really have little to do with the genre, but it´s worth going just to listen to the music, and to witness, for example, Argentina Santos. I love her interpretation of this classic Amalia Rodrigues fados: Lagrima (here´s the video. and the song.) Enjoy!

La muerte y otras sorpresas

Lamentamos muchísimo el fallecimiento de Mario Benedetti, el gran poeta y escritor uruguayo. Las canciones de Nacha Guevara como Te quiero, basadas en sus poesías realmente marcaron toda una época de mi vida. We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Mario Benedetti, the great Uruguayan poet and writer. His poetry set to song by Nacha Guevara, as in Te quiero, truly marked a period of my life. Adios, maestro, y gracias.

Rudo y Cursi - The soundtrack

I´ve been listening a lot the soundtrack of Gael García Bernal´s new movie, "Rudo y Cursi", directed by the talented Carlos Cuarón. Lots of fun tracks including some traditional music and also contemporary sounds like the sweet electro-pop of Amor Platónico by Jovenes y Sexys and the rocking rap of Niña Dioz, from Monterrey, N.L. Oh, and Gael sings too. En lo últimos días me la he pasado escuchando la banda sonora de la película nueva de Carlos Cuarón, "Rudo y Cursi", protagonizada por Gael García Bernal. Incluye música tradicional, al igual que pop de alta calidad como el dulce electro-pop de Jovenes y Sexys (Amor Platónico) y sonidos contemporáneos como los de la talentosa rapera regiomontana, Niña Dioz. Ah, y también canta Gael.

Do NOT miss the Second Feria del Libro Mexicano y Latino en Chicago. Besides books, there´ll be lots of art and music, too with special invited guests from Mexico like Tere Estrada, one of our great roqueras (listen to El Rap de la Trucha), as well as Olmeca, a hip-hop artist from L.A. (Listen to Cruzar el Río). NO FALTEN a la Segunda Feria del Libro Mexicano y Latino en Chicago. Aparte de libros, habrá mucha oportunidad de presenciar artes plásticas y música también cuando presente su libro acompañada de concierto la roquera Tere Estrada (escuchen El Rap de la Trucha), también viene de Los Angeles el músico rapero Olmeca (escuchen Cruzar el Río).

Lluvia de actividades en abril...April storms!

Abril ha sido un mes maravilloso, pero suuuuuumamente intenso...entrevisté a Gustavo Santaolalla y Martín Ferrés de Bajofondo... a Gustavo Dudamely al gran Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu para un reportaje para Chicago Public Radio que estoy preparando, entrevisté también a los talentosos chicos de Zizek...aquí un reportaje sobre Zizek en Global Hit (también pueden escuchar Cumbietón rutero)...produje otro segmento para Chicago Public Radio sobre la serie de lectura de poesía bilingÜe "Palabra Pura" sigo con la hora semanal de Beat Latino que comienza a las 10 a.m. los domingos en Radio Arte Chicago - a nivel nacional, compraron licencia para el programa especial para el Carnaval, KUT-HD y otra de México Mágico, KZYX ¡¡¡¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!!, escribí mi ensayo para Contratiempo...estoy escribiendo los ensayos de este mes y encima de todo esto, tuve el inmenso privilegio de ser maestra de ceremonias en un evento muy especial: Poesía en abril con la presencia y lectura del Padre Ernesto Cardenal...me disculparán, entonces, la falta de publicación en los últimos días. Abril has been a marvelous month, but extreeeeeeeeemely busy... I interviewed Gustavo Santaolalla and Martín Ferrés from Bajofondo... also Gustavo Dudamel, and the great Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu for a Chicago Public Radio feature I am preparing, also interviewed talented young Zizek collective members...here´s a Global Hit feature about Zizek (listen also to Cumbietón rutero)... hosted and produced still another feature for Chicago Public Radio about the bilingual poetry reading series "Palabra Pura"; I still of course, host and produce Beat Latino, aired Sundays at 10 a.m. on Radio Arte Chicago (through PRX, licenses for Beat Latino specials on Carnaval, purchased by KUT-HD and a special called México Mágico, purchased by KZYX ¡¡¡¡THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!), I wrote my monthly column for Contratiempo... I´m writing the column and a special essay for this month´s Contratiempo and on top of it all, I had the immense pleasure of emceeing a poetry event with guest of honor, Nobel prize nominee, Father Ernesto Cardenal... so I hope you will forgive me for the lack of posts in the last few weeks.
