Ya les platicaré porqué en otro mensaje....the fandango was born in Veracruz, a celebration that all participate in, whether it´s dancing or playing an instrument or singing along usually to a son jarocho. Veteranos - Memorial Day 2008

Este fin de semana se celebra la fiesta nacional de recordar los veteranos del país. Aportamos una pequeña colaboración musical a este día nacional con tres canciones: Vietnam Veterano (Smithsonian Folkways, antología llamada "Rolas de Aztlán") Juan va a la guerra (Quinteto Mocambo, de Veracruz, México) y La Guerra (Che Sudaka, músicos argentinos y catalanes, grupo de Barcelona), deseando más que nada y de todo corazón paz para este mundo. This weekend we celebrate the national festivity in which we remember the veterans of our country. We´ll add to the memorial, musically, with three songs: Vietnam Veterano (Smithsonian Folkways, compilation called "Rolas de Aztlán") Juan va a la guerra (Quinteto Mocambo, from Veracruz, Mexico) y La Guerra (Che Sudaka, musicians from Argentina and Spain, based in Barcelona) in memory of millions of Latino veterans, especially those that came back to fight for this (their) country after being deported, and hoping with all our heart to a different future of peace for world-round. Primera Feria del Libro Mexicano y Latino, 2008

Lindo poder participar en la Primera Feria del Libro Mexicano y Latino, donde volví a descubrir las múltiples facetas del blues mexicano, a través del libro y la presentación verbal y musical, con ármonica, de Jorge García Ledesma - les comparto "Tonada de la Luna", la canción tan reconocida del venezolano Simon Díaz, en la versión original y la versión en blues de Betsy Pecanins y Siguiendo el blues, de Follaje, el grupo de Jorge y también blues chicaguenses y latinos - una canción a nuestro barrio mexicano de Pilsen, de Azul de Noche; y de paso también me compré algunos libros divinos como el de "Revelaciones del Arte Popular Mexicano". Agradecemos a Gina Gamboa y Benjamín Anaya sus esfuerzos en producir la primera edición de lo que esperamos sean muchas de esta Feria. What a delight to be able to participate in the Primera Feria del Libro Mexicano y Latino, a book fair dedicated to Mexican and Latino books, where I rediscovered the many facets of Mexican and Chicano blues (yes, really, we got the blues too) thanks to the book and musica presentation on the harmonica by musician author Jorge García Ledesma - so here´s "Tonada de la Luna", world famous song by the Venezuelan icon and legend Simon Díaz, in its original version as well as the blues version by Betsy Pecanins and the song Siguiendo el blues, by Follaje, which is Jorge´s group, and even some Chicago Latino Blues - a song about Pilson, our Mexican barrio, by Azul de Noche; I was also able to buy some wonderful books incluing "Revelaciones del Arte Popular Mexicano". We totally appreciate the efforts of Gina Gamboa and Benjamín Anaya for producing the first of what we hope is many book fairs.

zapateando from Veracruz to Chicago

here in Chicago we had the amazing blessing tonight of opening the first Mexican and Latino Book Fair with the presence of Son Luna, from Tlacotalpan, Veracruz (see picture) whose principal singer, dancer and choreographer Ernesto Luna will be continuing his instrumental role in the staging of the play that will open the Goodman Theatre´s Latino Theatre Festival this summer, actually a restaging of "Al son que me toques, Lorca". Here´s a song by Son Luna, Aguanieves, and video examples of zapateado, including Sonex, a group that was recommended to me by these visiting musicians, demonstrating the kind of zapateado that the younger jarochos are developing in Mexico. Very intense, and very amazing. Here in Chicago, at the University of Illinois just hours earlier tonight, large groups of children between the ages of 7 and 11 stomped to their heart´s delight on the stage, in the freest percussive footwork - zapateado - I have seen in a long time. Aquí en Chicago hace unas pocas horas presencié un momento maravilloso - inauguramos la Primera Feria de Libros Mexicanos y Latinos con la actuación de Son Luna, cuyo cantante, bailaor y coreógrafo, Ernesto Luna, juega un papel importantísimo en el montaje nuevo de "Al son que me toques, Lorca" obra de Laura Crotte que inaugura el Festival de Teatro Latino en el Goodman Theatre el 8 de agosto. Aquí les pongo una canción de Son Luna, Aguanieves, y varios videos con ejemplos de zapateado incluyendo el de Sonex, grupo que me recomendó Edwin, del grupo que nos visitaba, en el que se demuestra el tipo de zapateado que los jarochos jovenes están desarrolando en Mexico. Intenso, lindo, increible. Aquí en Chicago, en la Universidad de Illinois, acompañando a la música de Son Luna, un gran grupo de niños entre la edad de 7 y 11 y pico se pusieron a zapatear con todo el alma y todo el corazón.

Me agrada el hecho que mis sobrinos, a pesar de ser bilingües que escuchan mucha música en inglés, también les gusta la música de nuestro universo latino, curiosamente música muchas veces descubierta en juegos de video y siempre a través del ciberespacio. Sus recomendaciones: Los Heroes del Silencio. Nonpoint. y Mala Rodriguez. Confieso que entre el rock en español de los Heroes, el rap-metal de Nonpoint y el rap-hip hop de Mala, coincidimos sobre todo mis sobrinos y yo en la música de Mala. My niece and nephews are bilingual, but listen mostly to music in English. Their recommendations for music in Spanish include the following which they have discovered in cyberspace and in video games: Los Heroes del Silencio. Nonpoint and Mala Rodriguez. I have to admit that between the rock en español of los Heroes, the metal-tinged rap of Nonpoint and Mala´s rap, we are in agreement most about the fabulous Mala´s music.

Feliz Día de la Madre/Happy Mother´s Day

¡Muy Feliz Día de la Madre! Fue celebrado hoy aquí en EE.UU., ayer 10 en México, el 30 de mayo se celebra en Nicaragua, y en varios otros días de mayo en otros de nuestros países. Como todo lo importante en la cultura latina, las madres tienen un nicho especial en nuestro universo musical. Algunos ejemplos: Volvére a mi madre (Los Viajeros, de Argentina), Amor de Madre (Aurora Vargas, España), Madre (Oscar D´Leon, Venezuela), Mañanitas a mi Madre (Mariachi México), Madre incomparable (Músicos, Campesinos y Poetas, Nicaragua). ¡Happy Mother´s Day! Celebrated today here in the USA, yesterday in Mexico, the 30th of the month in Nicaragua, and several other days in May throughout the Latino universe. Mayor Richard M. Daley has declared 2010 The Year of México in Chicago! The year 2010 also marks the 200th anniversary of Mexican Independence. and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. ¡El Alcalde Richard M. Daley ha nombrado el año 2010 Año de México en Chicago! En el 2010 celebraremos también el centésimo aniversario de la Revolución y el bicentésimo de la Independencia. Celebremos entonces los minutitos que quedan del 5 de mayo con una pequeña muestra de la música de México mágico, incluyendo blues y música de México en Chicago: músic regional mexicana gestada en Chicago (la canción número 8, del grupo chicaguense duranguense "Horóscopos de Durango", y la canción número 6, del grupo chicaguense Sones de México, nominado al Grammy) que se puede escuchar en el mini-ipod.

Star of the Desert/Etran Finitawa

Last night, the concert at Old Town by Etran Finitawa (Star of the Desert) made my top ten concert EVER list. Kudos to my friend and colleague Mateo Mulcahy for bringing them to Old Town. Their awesome vocals, incredible desert-blues guitar and divinely deep percussion on the water calabash, shimmered and wove a textured tapestry of sound that took us elsewhere, and got the audience on its feet, waving and clapping along .... beautiful music, and a wonderful discovery. Anoche el concierto del grupo del Niger llamado "La estrella del desierto" tejió una increible textura musical alrededor del público...definitivamente uno de los mejores conciertos a los que he asistido en mi vida. Musica mágica, entre los cantos intensos, una percusión divinamente resonante y profunda en instrumento de calabaza en agua, la guitarra tocando
blues nomádicos... A ratos en la percusión y la llamada-respuesta, me recordó nuestros propios beats afrolatinos, y aquí pongo la música de Etran Finitawa y algunos ejemplos de nuestros ritmos que seguramente llegaron a nosotros de esas partes: afrocolombianos (Petrona), afrovenezolanos (Huracán de Fuego), guaguancó (Cuba, Los Papines). At times in the more percussive, call and response moments it reminded me of other afrolatin beats, as of course it should, being Western African music which is of course, one of the primary sources of of ours. So here´s a sampler of a song by Etran Finitawe and the other beats it reminded me at times: afrocolombian (Petrona), afrovenezuelan (Huracán de Fuego), guaguancó (Cuba, Los Papines). Enjoy!
