Wednesday at Old Town!

Curumin's funky, hip-hop samba coming our way, part of the excellent "World Music Wednesday" series at Old Town! Gracias a Curumin, nos llegan sonidos de Brasil aliñados con mucho hip-hop. El miércoles, como parte de la excelente serie de conciertos "World Music Wednesdays" en Old Town.

Fuga y Misterio

Went to see "Tango Fire" last night, and I have to admit, that for my tastes, most of the dancing (defined by my Argentinan friends as "for export") was a bit heavy on leg-splaying and chest-thrusting, and too light on dynamics. But the music by Quatrotango was amazing - here´s one of the tunes they played, in the version of the maestro himself: Fuga y Misterio by Piazzolla. Beautifully, in the few minutes at the end of the show when the bandoneonista Hugo Satorre was brought out, albeit unwillingly, to dance on the stage with one of ensemble dancers, in the sweetness of movement and the aching expression of the tango in his body lines and form, for those brief two minutes I really felt the tango. Fui a ver la función de "Tango Fire" anoche, y debo reconocer que para mi gusto, mucho del tango que vi bailar (que dicen mis amigos argentinos era más bien "for export" y para el gusto del público anglosajón y ruso, que eran la mayoría en el auditorio) mostraba mucha pierna al aire y pecho pa´adelante, y no suficientes matices. A pesar de esto, bellísima la música de Quatrotango - escuchen una de las piezas que tocaron, en la interpretación del maestro y compositor mismo: Fuga y Misterio de Piazzolla. Maravillosamente, en los breves minutos al final del programa en los que una bailarina sacó a bailar al bandoneonista Hugo Satorre, sentimos en el anhelo de la línea de su cuerpo y la dulzura de sus movimientos, lo que sí es el tango.

Increibles los hechos de esta semana. Celebramos los primeros días del nuevo presidente con una salsa de las que consideramos impulsaron el voto latino hacia el Señor Presidente Obama. An amazing, amazing week! We´ll celebrate the events with a salsa tune that was composed for the President when he was a candidate.

Coming our way to House of Blues April 5!!! Aterciopelados from Colombia. We´ve liked them for a long time, and their latest made the short list for best of 2008. Se celebrará un concierto con música y danza en Old Town School of Folk Music mañana para recaudar fondos a favor de las víctimas de los huracanes en Haití y Cuba. Una excelente manera de apoyar a nuestros compañeros de esas tierras, y aparte experimentar una linda música. Les comparto una canción que es colaboración musical entre Haití y Cuba, para animarlos: de Wyclef Jean acompañado con la incomparable Celia Cruz: una Guantanamera.
A concert tomorrow at Old Town including music and dance will be held to raise funds for hurricane victims in Haiti and Cuba. An excellent way to support the cause and while we´re at it, listen to some great music.
